The Red Hot Chili Peppers have released over a career spanning more than 40 years. Their discography is often categorized by the various eras of their guitarists, most notably the four stints of John Frusciante , whose presence often coincided with their greatest commercial and critical successes. Essential Listening: The Masterpieces

– Transitional album with new guitarist John Frusciante (then 19). Harder rock than funk, but includes their first major hit. Key tracks: “Higher Ground” (Stevie Wonder cover), “Knock Me Down,” “Taste the Pain.”

Their second album, (1985), was produced by George Clinton and showcased the band's funky, rock sound. Although it still didn't gain much commercial success, it laid the groundwork for their future work.

– Companion album (released same year) with weirder, looser, more experimental tracks — closer to Stadium Arcadium ’s B-sides. Key tracks: “Eddie” (tribute to Eddie Van Halen), “Tippa My Tongue,” “The Drummer.”
