Despite its strengths, the Prueba Panel is not without limitations. The ongoing economic and logistical crisis in Venezuela has, at times, led to shortages of specific reagents. CICPC chemists have had to improvise or reduce the number of tests in a standard panel, potentially compromising the protocol. Furthermore, the panel is presumptive by nature; it cannot quantify the substance nor distinguish between isomeric compounds. Therefore, the CICPC protocol mandates that a positive panel must always be followed by instrumental confirmation (HPLC or GC-MS) for the evidence to be considered plena prueba (full proof) in serious felonies.
